D.A.R.E.

The Cumberland Police Department has been conducting classes in the nationally known D.A.R.E. program since 1992. Chief Charron delivered the first lessons at the North Yarmouth Memorial School during the fall and winter of that year. Since then officer Dalbec has been conducting the lessons and has expanded the program to all schools in the S.A.D. 51 school system.

Cumberland P.D. begins educational presentations in the area day care centers and nursery schools.
Officer Burgess conducts general safety presentations to this age group. Officer Burgess also rides the school busses on the first day of school for students entering kindergarten. He discusses with students conduct on the bus.

D.A.R.E visitations begin at the second grade level and multi age classes. Two weeks of instruction on such things as personal safety, good touch/bad touch, self esteem building, and responsibility.

The fourth grade curriculum consists of two weeks of five forty minute classes per day. The instruction includes personal safety, self esteem building, team work, anti-violence, and anti-drug messages.

The fifth grade core curriculum consist of seventeen lessons delivered to all fifth graders and multi age classes during the fall and winter. Each class is forty five minutes long. The core curriculum covers a wide range of topics and activities.

Officer Dalbec conducts a two week D.A.R.E. program at the seventh grade level. Topics include criminal and juvenile laws, decision making skills, anti-violence and anti-drug messages, team work, self esteem, peer pressure just to name a few.

In 2000, Officer Dalbec received training as the department's School Resource Officer (SRO). Officer Dalbec has been assigned as the SRO to Greely High and Junior High School. He is on campus and available to all schools throughout the school year.

In addition to providing programs in all schools Officer Dalbec conducts yearly events with students at all grade levels. Such events include, Sea Dogs outings, students skating with the Portland Pirates for D.A.R.E. graduation, and trips to local sporting events. Officer Dalbec incorporates D.A.R.E. role models in his curriculum. This years cop cards include a card featuring all the role models. The Cumberland Police Department D.A.R.E. program supports Greely High School athletic programs.

What's next? Officer Dalbec has plans to create a D.A.R.E. alumni association consisting of former D.A.R.E. students from S.A.D. 51.
