2018 Season Greely Golf Tryouts

This year we are looking at between 40-50 golfers playing golf. Although a great problem to have, the course is limited to the number of times it can provide and still finish by nightfall.  This year, we will be implementing the following team cuts based on grade.  Tryouts are comprised of five 9-hole scores. We will average your best 4 scores.  If you are a freshman and your average is lower than 60, you will make the cut. If you are a sophomore and your average is lower than 55, you make the cut. If you are junior/senior and your average is lower than 50, you will make the cut.  The cut line for varsity golf is 45.  Numbers may increase based on quality of participation but will not decrease.

Open practice – optional for all (unsupervised)

·         8/13 – 7:30 PM Range

·         8/14 – 7:00 PM Putting Green

·         8/15 – 7:30 PM Range

·         8/16 – 7:30 PM Range

Mandatory tryouts for all golfers

·         8/20 – Tryouts; 6 players will play in the SMAA Team Championship; All others 3:00 PM (9-holes)

·         8/21 – Tryouts for all 11:00 AM (18-holes)

·         8/22 – Tryouts for all 11:00 AM (18-holes); Varsity and JV cuts

·         8/23 – Varsity practice and JV practice – TBD

At Greely, we combine varsity and junior varsity golf into one team and select players to play in matches via their performance and golf scoring average.

  1. The competition and scoring averages will be used to make an initial cut of approximately 8-10 players on varsity.  At times less than one tenth of a shot separates players.
  2. We don’t want to pigeon-hole golfers into a varsity or a junior varsity role with little hope of moving up.  We also don’t want to send golfers “down” to junior varsity.
  3. We also want to create a competitive environment where golfers at the end of the varsity bench get little exposure to match situations (on varsity but not playing in either varsity or junior varsity matches).
  4. We need to prepare this year’s golfers for the States and develop the best possible team we can.  And, at the same time, we need to prepare underclassmen for next year’s States.  We believe creating a competitive environment up and down the line-up is the best way to do it.
  5. We are working with the Senior Class and team captains to develop the qualifying criteria for a varsity letter.
  6. Missing tryouts or practice without approved reasons may result in golfers moving to JV’s regardless of scoring average.
  7. Scoring averages are weighted with the most current scoring average worth more and older scores worth less.

Please email me at bbickford@pga.com if you have any questions.  Thanks.

2017 Season

Tryouts will begin Monday, August 21st at 3:00 PM.  A little different this year, we will play 9-holes 8/21, 8/22 and 8/23. Depending on team size, we may be cutting to the top 24 golfers (8-10 varsity and 12-14 JV…however we will be using the One Team Concept below).  Remember:  This is an initial assignment.  Your future status is based on your future performance. A golfer unable to make tryouts will start on JV.

Results of tryouts…Varsity will consist of Rachel Smith (109); Jake McDonald (128); Ben Rosenthal (132); Andrew Klein (146); Greg Ryder (148); Nathan Cyr (149); Jacob Whiting (149) and DJ Kenney (151). Practice will be Thursday, 8/24, afternoon at 3:00 pm.

JV’s will consist of Justin Fairbanks (154); Henry Clapp (156); Sawyer Gagnon (157); Tobin Snow (160); Jared Merrifield (164); Eben Kiesow (165); and Nathan Bryant (173).  Practice will be held on Monday, 9/28 at 3:00 pm.

Forecast Fall Preview

GOLF

COACH: Brian Bickford (sixth year)

2013 results: 9-1 (4th @ Class A state match)

TOP RETURNING PLAYERS: Chaz Reade (Senior), Sam Burgoyne (Junior), Nathan Gervais (Junior), Aidan Roberts (Junior), Jacob Storey (Junior), Ryan Megathlin (Sophomore), Erin Holmes (Sophomore), Sarah Novick (Sophomore), Joe Piwowarski (Sophomore), Tate Porter (Sophomore)

TOP FOES: Gorham, Thornton Academy

COACH’S COMMENT: “We have a young team, but we should be competitive. We’ll continue a tradition of strong girls’ players. We’re hopeful to be competitive with a goal of making the state championships in October..”

THE FORECASTER’S FORECAST: Greely was excellent in 2013 and while the roster is underclassmen-laden, it might just win the program’s first state title in golf since capturing Class B back in 1995.

This year’s team will be led by Burgoyne, who was a second-team all-star a year ago after shooting a 79 at the team state match and an 85 at the Class A individual championships. He’s joined by Roberts (85 at states) and Gervais (89 at states). Megathlin and Porter also have experience and have played well during tryouts. Piwowarski, Reade and Storey hope to figure into the mix. Freshmen Nathan Bryant, Nathan Cyr, Eben Kiesow and Duncan Lary add depth and will look to get an opportunity. Then there’s the girls’ element. The Rangers always seem to boast some of the best female golfers in the state and 2014 will be no different. A year ago, Holmes made the girls’ all-star team after tying for 10th at states with a round of 98. Novick came in 25th. They’re joined by sophomores Katilin Hughes and Jenna Pavis and freshman Hannah Storey.

Greely is in a tough division and even making it to states is no guarantee, but the guess here is that the Rangers will qualify and will do very well on the big stage, not only as a team, but the following week, when several individuals will follow suit.

“ONE TEAM” CONCEPT

Following much deliberation in 2013, we decided to combine varsity and junior varsity golf into one team and select players to play in matches via a golf ladder (explained below).  The reasons were simple:

  1. The competition and scoring averages are very close to make a traditional cut of approximately 12 players.  At times less than one tenth of a shot separates players.
  2. We don’t want to pigeon-hole golfers into a varsity or a junior varsity role with little hope of moving up.  We also don’t want to send golfers “down” to junior varsity.
  3. We also don’t want to create a non-competitive environment where golfers at the end of the varsity bench get little exposure to match situations (on varsity but not playing in either varsity or junior varsity matches).
  6. Below are the instructions for the Greely Golf Ladder.  We believe this will provide a competitive environment without adding internal pressure of trying to make varsity.
  7. The change has the support of the coaches, the athletic director and the Greely Senior class (2013).

Greely Golf Ladder – Rules of Competition

  1. The object of the ladder is to try to climb to the top position and play in matches.
  2. Coaches will establish the matches.  You may play someone 1 or 2 spots above you in the ladder.
  3. You will probably not play the same person twice in a row.
  4. Matches will occur twice a week during practice.
  5. Match play will determine the winner of the match.  Your stroke play score will be the tie breaker followed by matching cards (individual holes beginning with the last hole and working backwards).
  6. Based on performance and ranking coaches will select golfers to play in both varsity and junior varsity matches.

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF:  Preseason & Tryouts

  • The hands-off period ends Monday, August 13th.  We will provide 2 “optional” days to play.  They are truly optional and do not effect team selection.  We provide these two days as prep days for tryouts which happen the following week.  THE DATES OF THE PLAY DAYS ARE 8/14 AND 8/16 AT 2:00 PM.  PLEASE BE AT VAL HALLA BY 1:45 SO WE CAN START AT 2:00.
  • Anyone trying out for Varsity is expected to attend tryouts on August 20-22.  Times of tryouts are as follows:
    • Monday, 8/20, 10:30 team meeting, 11:30 first tee time, 9-holes
    • Tuesday, 8/21, 8:30 team meeting, 9:00 first tee time, 18-holes
    • Wednesday, 8/22, 8:30 team meeting, 9:00 first tee time, 18-holes
    • The initial Varsity team will be made up of the low 8 scores (best 4 of 5 9-holes rounds from the previous 3 days of tryouts).  Golfers with scores placing them in the 9-16 spots will compete in a separate practice (yet to be determined) to determine who fills the remaining 4 varsity spots.  All players not making Varsity will start on Junior Varsity and can make their way on to Varsity with improved scores.
  • If a player is unable to make the tryouts, they start on the Junior Varsity and may work their way up the ladder.
  • The expected mode of communication is email and this website.  Players are required to check their emails and this website to get information.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GOLF:  We will not start until the first week of September.  Move information coming!

PLEASE CLICK HERE TO REGISTER TO PLAY.

Players must fill out YELLOW, GREEN and address the ATHLETIC FEE accordance with School Board Policy.  The link to the forms is HERE.

Greely Qualifier 2012 – FINAL RESULTS

I would like to commend everyone who tried out for Greely.  The course was great and so was the weather.  I was particularly pleased with the number of juniors trying out and the good sportsmanship and etiquette observed by all.   Thank you!  Keep in mind that golf is a difficult sport and, if you think you can improve your game/score, you will move up in your standing on the team.  Golf is very objective that way!  Keep up the good work and your perserverance will serve you well…I am very proud of all who tried.  Great job!

GOLF (The Forecaster)

COACH: Brian Bickford (fourth year)

2011 Results: 7-2 (no postseason)

TOP RETURNING PLAYERS: Kyle Bickford (Senior), Sarah Hansen (Senior), Tucker Hawkinson (Senior), Kyle Megathlin (Senior), Nick Plummer (Senior), Tom Buchholz (Junior), Bailey Train (Junior), Connor Terison (Junior)

TOP FOES: Falmouth, Gorham, Thornton Academy

COACH’S COMMENT: “We would like to play in the team states this year. Our strength is our depth and the ability to reload. We look to jell as the season progresses.”

THE FORECASTER’S FORECAST: Greely’s golf program has been as strong as any for many years and this season, the Rangers will look to make it to the Class A state meet for the first time since moving up. The pieces are in place for that to happen. Among the returners are all-stars Bickford, Hansen and Megathlin. Hansen tied for second in the girls’ individual tournament. Megathlin tied for 15th in the Class A boys’ individual match. Train is a great athlete who can crush the ball. Buchholz, Hawkinson and Plummer also have experience. Several newcomers will make the team even stronger. That group includes sophomores Will Bryant, Harry Crosby, Will Schad and John Wright and freshmen Sam Burgoyne, Nathan Gervais, Kyle Hansen, Aidan Roberts and Jacob Storey. Greely has some tough opposition in its division, but should win several matches. The Rangers want to be at their best when it comes to qualifying. Look for this group to get to states as a team and for several individuals to make some serious noise as well.
